Pediatric brain and spine tumor leaders from all over the world gathered in Philadelphia, PA, to learn from leaders in the field, share important data, network, and work toward a better future for children around the world. Thanks to your generous contributions, the National Brain Tumor Society and the CERN Foundation were able to support this important conference and share key updates from the advocate side such as NBTS’s MyTumorID campaign and the recently updated Ependymoma Guide. In addition, CERN-supported researchers had the chance to connect and collaborate on active projects ensuring open communication.

Colorado Couple Create the Gray Matter Classic to Help Others with Ependymoma

In 2020, my wife Megan was diagnosed with a rare brain and spinal tumor known as a grade 3 anaplastic ependymoma, a very aggressive and difficult to treat disease. However, working with the great people at Collaborative Ependymoma Research Network, we were able to find the right doctors for the best treatments available. Because of CERN and their funded research into medical treatments for ependymoma, Megan is still here and doing incredibly well. As a way to give thanks, we created the Gray Matter Classic – a golf tournament focused on raising money and awareness for CERN and its parent organization National Brain Tumor Society The CERN Foundation, a program of the National Brain Tumor Society.

The CERN Foundation and the National Brain Tumor Society have joined forces to help people with ependymoma and advance ependymoma research toward the development of new and better treatments through the creation of the Ependymoma Fund for Research and Education. Today, the CERN Foundation is officially a designated program of the National Brain Tumor Society. Donations to the Ependymoma Fund for Research and Education will be made on the NBTS website and used to support research efforts that will benefit both ependymoma patients and research through CERN. Emphasis will be placed on CERN’s historical model of supporting work that translates basic science into clinical practice. The Fund will also address overcoming barriers to clinical trial accrual and the development of new clinical studies for ependymoma patients. Additional funds will be used to support educational efforts through print, media, and awareness events. The new collaborative Ependymoma Fund will continue CERN’s practice and tradition of involving and collaborating with other scientists, medical providers, foundations and supporters of ependymoma research.
